Wessex Water Services Limited is the top performing water and sewerage company in the UK, serving 2.8 million customers across the south west of England. We operate to strict regulatory and service standards. The company owns and operates assets with a value of approximately GBP 14 billion and invests approximately GBP 200 million per annum on asset improvements.

We have a vacancy for a waste adviser to provide technical support on all aspects of waste management across Wessex Water and its associated businesses. This is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their waste management skills within the water and construction industry, driving best practice and ensuring compliance with UK waste management legislation

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical advice on waste management, strategic waste minimisation solutions and land contamination issues, including compliance with current and future legislation.
  • Identifying and developing opportunities to reduce waste, promote resource efficiency and increase recycling, with the core aim of improving the group's environmental and sustainability performance and achieving the corporate zero waste to landfill target.
  • Developing training strategies for promoting and embedding best practice waste management, including co-ordinating quarterly company-wide Waste Forum meetings.
  • Managing the waste environmental permitting process and contractor licences in order to reduce associated costs and maintain compliance.
  • Acting as a qualified person to enable waste to be dealt with under the Aggregates Protocol/CL:AIRE code of practice.
  • Negotiation and management of waste framework contracts to ensure compliance with agreed service level standards and external legislation, and continuity of supply.
  • Conducting internal and external (supply chain) waste management improvement reviews in order to monitor performance, identify non-compliance, identify risk areas and set improvement plans.

The ideal candidate for the role should have:

  • Degree in environmental science or associated waste/contaminated land discipline.
  • Chartered membership of relevant professional body.
  • Qualified person status under the CL:AIRE code of practice.
  • Detailed knowledge of current EU/UK waste management legislation.
  • Experience in waste characterisation assessments and knowledge of contaminated land assessment techniques.
  • An understanding of the negotiation and management of effective supplier agreements.
  • The ability to shape strategy in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • The ability to be effective in planning, organising and delivering new initiatives.

In return we offer:

  • Defined contribution pension scheme.
  • Company car or car allowance.
  • 24 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service and you can buy or sell leave after one year's service.
  • Childcare vouchers.
  • Cycle2Work scheme.
  • Discounts and cashback scheme from more than 1,200 high street and online suppliers.
