Are you passionate about protecting the environment? Would you be keen to work with external companies in regulating their industrial wastewater discharge? If so, we have a great opportunity for you to join our team as a Trade Effluent Technician.

What you'll do

Our team liaises with hundreds of businesses and factories discharging wastewater within our region and aims to balance their requirements with our duty to protect the sewer network, water recycling centres and ultimately the environment.

Your role will be instrumental in supporting the Trade Effluent Officers in issuing consents and managing breaches under the provision of the Water Industry Act 1991.

In your role, you will:

  • deal with a variety of industries and sectors, from aviation and food manufacturing to breweries and chemical manufacturers
  • risk assess the impact of wastewater discharges from industrial sites, analysing data and preparing technical reports
  • monitor and progress the team's enforcement actions
  • liaise with trade effluent customers to determine the cause, solutions and measures taken to prevent future consent breaches
  • be responsible for trade effluent records, including the consent database, analytical and flow monitoring data, wholesale billing and contact details.

What you'll need

Ideally, you will have a degree qualification or equivalent in a science or engineering-based subject. Preferably, you will have an understanding of wastewater treatment or industrial production processes.

You will also need:

  • good computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • to be accurate and have good attention to detail as you will be analysing data
  • strong communication skills
  • to enjoy working in a team environment
  • to be able to work independently and take ownership of multiple projects
  • a full driving licence as you will make occasional site visits and attend meetings at external companies.

Experience liaising with customers and/or applying environmental legislation would be an advantage, although training will be provided.

What you'll receive

  • Total pension contributions up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to buy up to 10 days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary.
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
