The Fair Isle Bird Observatory (FIBO) is an independent, non-profit-making charity which carries out ornithological studies and research and provides hotel accommodation for visitors to the remote Scottish island of Fair Isle.

The Head of Ornithology co-ordinates the agreed programme of scientific monitoring and research on birds, other taxa and the wider environment. They also manage the team of seasonal staff (two assistants and the ranger). The work programme will include monitoring of breeding seabirds carried out under contract to the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), surveys of other breeding bird species, long-term systematic daily monitoring of migrant birds, bird ringing, and documentation of rarities.

The brand-new 40-bed hotel is the island’s primary accommodation for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts and island tourists between early April and the end of October. The HO should engage with and assist all visitors to the Observatory, ensuring that they receive a warm welcome and that their stay is in all respects enjoyable and satisfying.

The post is complemented by a Hospitality Manager (HM) who will manage the hotel and liaise with and support the HO. There is the opportunity for a joint HM/HO appointment with spouses/partners working in the two roles.

The HO will be resident on the island in self-contained accommodation, suitable for a small family, attached to the hotel. Benefits include accommodation, food and utilities.

This is a challenging and responsible post requiring considerable initiative, dedication and autonomy to assist in the continuing development of studies at a world-famous centre for research. The successful applicant will be required to have a sound up-to-date knowledge of the identification and ecology of West Palearctic birds, including rare species, have bird ringing experience ideally with or willingness to qualify for A permit and experience of monitoring of breeding birds, population surveys and other standard monitoring techniques.

Further information is available on our website.

The deadline for applications is 11th December 2024. We regret that we will be unable to give feedback on unsuccessful applications.
