Closing date: Friday, 9th August 2024

We are looking for a Conservation Application Developer to support the development of the RSPB's in-house GIS and Conservation Data system.

What's the role about?

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative team supporting the full range of the RSPB’s conservation work. You’ll use your technical expertise to help us deliver a replacement to our in house web-mapping and conservation data management system Merlin, finding innovative solutions to meet the needs of conservation staff across the UK and beyond.

Working closely with the product team and subject matter experts across the RSPB, you will work in an Agile fashion to deliver value to conservation staff quickly and consistently. Depending on the nature of requirements you may be building new functionality into existing applications, or helping to define and deliver new solutions, using the best blend of technologies to ensure successful delivery.

Working with colleagues across the organisation, you will support the full range of the RSPB’s work, varying from our management of over 220 nature reserves to our world-class scientific research, and delivery of landscape scale conservation, to name but a few. As the importance of collaborative working and open data grows, you will help to integrate our conservation data with key datasets both within the RSPB and externally to deliver new capabilities and insights.

You will work alongside experienced developers within the Conservation Data Management Unit and have the opportunity to grow your knowledge of GIS, front and back-end development and working as part of a high performing Agile team.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience

  • Experience of working under Agile principles to develop complex applications
  • Strong experience of C#/JavaScript/HTML/CSS to deliver intuitive, user-friendly applications
  • Experience of at least one of the following JavaScript frameworks: Angular, React or Vue
  • Experience in writing unit tests
  • Knowledge of maintaining and managing APIs
  • A keen interest in GIS/mapping systems
  • The ability to communicate effectively with a range of technical and non-technical stakeholders, demonstrating initiative with a positive and proactive attitude.
  • A high degree of experience with both SQL server and SQL scripting

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Experience of working with GIS/mapping systems
  • Experience of the Angular javascript framework
  • Knowledge/experience of conservation work and systems
  • A knowledge of Python, with experience of ESRI's ArcPy package being especially desirable

This is a Permanent Full-Time role for 37.5 hours per week. For further information, please contact [email protected]

As part of this application process you will be asked to complete an application form including evidence on how you meet the skills, knowledge and experience listed above.

We are looking to conduct interviews for this position as soon as suitable candidates present themselves, so please do not delay in applying. We reserve the right to close once sufficient applications have been received.

We are committed to developing an inclusive and diverse RSPB, in which everyone feels supported, valued and able to be their full selves. To achieve our vision of creating a world richer in nature, we need more people, and more diverse people, on nature's side. People of colour and disabled people are currently under-represented across the environment, climate, sustainability, and conservation sector. If you identify as a person of colour and/or disabled, we are particularly interested in receiving your application. Contact us to discuss any additional support you may need to complete your application.
