Are you fascinated by colourful leaves, acorns and blossoms? If you’ve ever wanted to know more about the trees around us, this is the online course for you.

Learn from the comfort of your own home with FSC’s online courses.

Join other people who share an interest in nature – some course participants might be volunteers with wildlife trusts, others might just be interested in finding out more about trees.

This is a 4 week course with an interactive Zoom workshop for each topic of content but access to online course materials will be available until 17:00 Friday 28th May 2021.

Allow ~ 90 min of independent work to complete each topic ahead of each live workshop.

This course is about how trees fit into the plant kingdom, the different trees we have here in the UK and their characteristics.

With no prior knowledge needed, all you need is an interest in the trees around you. You will quickly grow in confidence and begin to get to grips with a truly fascinating subject. This course takes you from the very basics of what a tree is, and builds from there. Later topics take you through introducing how trees reproduce and introduce the two main types of tree in this country – coniferous and broadleaf trees.

By the end of the course, you will be able to

  • Understand how trees fit into the plant kingdom, the key differences between angiosperms and gymnosperms, and the basic structure of a tree
  • Be able to: understand the basics of tree photosynthesis, life cycles, habitats, niches, ecosystem services
  • Be able to: recognise by key characteristics some of the most common conifers in the UK
  • Be able to: recognise by key characteristics some of the most common broadleaf trees in the UK
  • Share this knowledge with friends, family and fellow volunteers

After attending this course, you may like to progress your learning about trees with further relevant FSC courses, or branch out into other areas of the plant kingdom. FSC offers both online and in person courses, so you can choose the learning style that suits you best.
