Creating sustainable human habitats and behaviours.

Join students from CAT’s Graduate School of the Environment to explore how our cities and communities can be transformed to help address and adapt to climate change and other environmental challenges whilst enhancing human health and wellbeing.

  • Start and finish times: starts at 11am and ends at 4pm on the last day

Course content

Key topics of study will include:

  • How cities and communities will be influenced by the challenges and opportunities brought about by the need to mitigate and adapt to climate change
  • The qualities and purposes of community spaces as part of the cultural urban landscape will be reframed from a sustainability and adaptation planning perspective
  • Environmental impacts, sustainability and adaptation issues facing the built environment will be analysed, looking at the demand for materials, energy, infrastructure, maintenance and transportation
  • Specific phenomena of cities (e.g. urban heat islands and biodiversity planning) will be considered, along with the urban regeneration and transformations required to address them as the climate changes
  • The urban and community form will be analysed for the potential design, social structure and behaviour changes required under an ethos of sustainability and adaptation
  • Current status of urban and community statutory development control and planning, enforcement of sustainable practices and key environmental legislation and compliance measures will be looked at, as well as community-based initiatives and grassroots strategies
