Thrive's Award in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) Programme Development is period of self directed study during which participants will produce a written description of a year round horticultural programme for specific client groups. Thrive offers a dedicated two day course that provides direct access to this.

Access to the Award is normally via one of our client specific courses on our specialist knowledge programme, however, for Occupational Therapists or any Health and Social Care professionals this course provides learning that builds on existing experience and will explore the uniqueness of using gardens and gardening in therapy. It will also explore the use of therapeutic horticulture with clients with a wide range of support needs in settings that will be familiar to Health and Social Care professionals.

What you will learn:

  • To understand and know how to apply the principles and practice of social and therapeutic horticulture to benefit people who have a wide range of support needs
  • To gain an insight into the role of a horticultural therapist working with people who have a wide range of support needs
  • To be able to design a client centred social and therapeutic horticulture programme
  • To understand the importance and explore the tools of assessment, monitoring, evaluation, horticultural programming and planning for garden projects and for the individuals attending a garden project.
