Cost: £485

Sectors: conservation & wildlife, ecology

We will look at the ecology of dormice, their conservation and relevant legislation. In addition, we will consider how to survey for dormice and how to set up a regular monitoring site and the requirements both to obtain a disturbance license and a mitigation license.

This is an intensive course with a maximum of nine delegates and three trainers. Day 1 will focus on dormouse ecology, conservation, survey techniques and dormouse familiarisation. On Day 2, we will look at woodland management and visit at least two sites to look at site variation. On Day 3, we will stay on the Briddlesford wood estate checking boxes there and looking at a variety of management techniques. The course will finish with a brief quiz on what we have covered. The aim will be to see, and provide the opportunity for delegates to handle as many dormice as possible. We are unable to guarantee the provision of a reference for a dormouse licence from this course, as we do not know either people’s ability, or the number of dormice we will find. What we have achieved in the past is at least the offer to provide a secondary reference, if delegates continue to work with another licence holder who can provide a primary reference. In some circumstance, where delegates already have some dormouse experience, we have been able to provide a primary reference.
