The serious consequences of environmental and climatic change require urgent technical innovation. Alongside such adaptations, it is becoming clear that major systemic, political and societal changes are necessary to move towards true sustainability.

Assess theories of societal and behaviour change at all levels: personal; organisational; community, institutional and governmental, drawing on theories of behavioural science, social and systems models.

Explore behaviour change through case studies across the world, in communities, institutions, businesses, and wider structural change. Focus on cities, governance structures and policy and interventions at community level.

Examine the role of public perceptions of environmental risk and behaviour change in transformational sustainability and adaptation to global environmental issues.

Learn about the skills required to facilitate those changes through successful communication and engagement strategies, and develop your own skills in leadership and communication.

Topics covered:

  • Communicating transformational social change;
  • Theoretical approaches to transformational social change;
  • Introduction to sustainability and adaption;
  • Environmental politics and economics;
  • Cities and communities;
  • Energy provision and demand management
  • Research Skills
