Forest Green, Surrey
1st - 2nd May 2018 01722322539 Dominic Price

Cost: £110 or £180 including assessment module

Sectors: ecology, conservation & wildlife

A two day practical course giving participants an introduction to;

  • identification and ecology of Great Crested Newts
  • the legislation protecting them
  • survey standards
  • interpretation and application of survey results

Plus an opportunity to be assessed for a licence application reference

An introduction to the ID and ecology of GCN, protective legislation, survey techniques, survey standards, what the results of these surveys tell us and what one should do with the information. The course is very much practical and intends to provide an insight into the sorts of hiccups that might be encountered when GCN ‘clash’ with development. It is considered essential that attendees remain overnight to accompany the tutor on an evening of torch surveys and to collect in bottle traps the next morning. Mitigation measures will be discussed but will only be in the detail that time allows (although a chat over a pint whilst waiting for dark should allow plenty of time). This course is intended for; Consultant Ecologists, Local Authority Ecologists, Park Wardens, Reserve Rangers and Land Managers.

Survey Licence Applications: For those hoping to acquire a reference for a survey licence, there will be a test to ensure you have absorbed the information provided. You will also be invited 1) to remain later into the night than other attendees; conducting further torch surveys and 2) to remain after the end of the course so that you can prove your ability to make and set and retrieve bottle traps successfully and consistently. Whilst these extra parts of the course are intended to give you opportunities to impress, whether or not to provide a reference at this stage will still be at the discretion of the tutor.
