Course: Using Wildlife Observation Apps (Skills for Ecology Webinar)
Biological Recording Company
Biological records, also known as species occurrence records, are the foundation of our understanding of the natural world. Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher, an insect enthusiast, or a casual observer exploring with your family or school, wildlife observation is an engaging activity that also contributes valuable data. These records inform local, national, and international species distribution datasets, helping scientists study wildlife, conservationists protect habitats, and planners and ecologists make informed decisions about developments.
Advancements in technology have transformed how we capture wildlife observations. Smartphones now allow anyone to record and submit data in real time. However, with so many apps available, it can be challenging for beginners to choose the right one and fully utilise its features. This session will introduce you to popular wildlife observation apps and guide you through key considerations to help you and your volunteers get started with biological recording.
Learn about:
- Popular Wildlife Observation Apps: Explore BirdTrack, iRecord, iNaturalist, and more.
- Key Features: Learn about AI tools, mapping capabilities, multimedia options, and activity-based projects.
- The Data Journey: Understand where your wildlife data goes and how it’s used.
- Species Identification and Validation: Discover how records are verified and validated across different apps.
At the end of the session, learners should feel more confident using wildlife observation apps to generate biological records.
The 90-minute event will consist of a 1-hour presentation followed by a Q&A with the tutor using questions provided by the live audience.
The presentations will be recorded and shared with those who booked alongside Q&A transcripts and relevant links following the event via a password-protected website.
