Volunteer Sustainability Advisor

Minimum Time Commitment

  • Volunteers will be required for 1-3 days a week, between 7-16 hours.
  • Commit to regular fixed days and hours each week to aid advance planning of the service.
  • The placement will last for 3-12 months.
  • Hours are flexible and negotiable to suit the volunteer.

Duties of the position

  • Assist the Sustainability Advice Officer in tackling fuel poverty, promoting energy efficiency and environmental sustainability to residents.
  • Perform simple home energy surveys and give advice to residents on how to manage fuel bills and heating controls.
  • Answer queries from residents via telephone, email and in person.
  • Compile information about home energy-related issues, sustainability activities and achievements.
  • Help coordinate contact with residents, including booking advice sessions and sending out reports.
  • Keep databases up to date.
  • Engage in a dialogue with residents about how they would like to be involved in Peabody’s sustainability activities and strategies.

Skills/ Experience/ Characteristics

  • Basic IT Skills, including MS Word, Excel and email.
  • Polite.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Good telephone manner.
  • Good listening skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to be objective and work within professional boundaries.
  • An awareness of the difficulties faced by those who are socially isolated and vulnerable and/ or have special needs.
  • Ability to be understanding and be sensitive
  • Be punctual and reliable.

  • Do not make any unofficial, unreported contact with customers.
  • Do not carry out paid or unpaid private work or provide services on a personal basis (or vice versa).
  • Do not borrow from or loan money/items to customers.
  • Do not be critical of each other or of staff members to customers or other parties.

Training & Orientation

An understanding of and willingness to work within Peabody’s policies and practices, including Equalities & Diversity, Health & Safety and Privacy & Confidentiality Policies.

Ability to participate in the volunteer training programme (one induction day and training sessions relevant to volunteer placement i.e. first aid / health & safety, as well as on-the-job training alongside the Advice Officers)

Basic computer skills will be offered if required (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Suitable volunteers may be offered more formal, certified training, depending on performance and career goals.
