Anna-Marie Kyriacou

People & Wildlife Officer

Sussex Wildlife Trust

What does your job involve and what might a typical day involve?

This is such a diverse job ranging from managing all types of volunteers (practical, environmental education etc) and training, supporting, supervising them. I also organise events and courses to promote interaction between people and wildlife with the aim of expanding people’s wildlife knowledge and interest. I also manage the children’s environmental education club ‘Sussex Wildlife Watch’ to encourage children at an early age to engage with their environment which is run by volunteers.

The Sussex Wildlife Trust would not be able to carry out all of it’s work without the immense support that the volunteers give (cureenlty 500 of them) and it is my job to make sure that they are well supported and thanked for what they give

What qualifications and experience did you have before starting the job?

Experience of working in the voluntary sector, teaching and facilitation background alongside some wildlife knowledge. Ability to communicate with a diverse audience.

What are the best and worst bits of your job?

The best parts are seeing our volunteers succeed in getting the skills that they needed through us in getting their first job!!

The worst part is not being able to cater for the huge demand of graduates who are looking to get their foot in the door. We operate on first come first served basis, alongside pot luck, as to when there are projects available. It’s difficult to turn people down for a voluntary post.

What satisfaction do you get from your work and how does it make a difference?

The most satisfying part is making people’s dream come true by training them in the skills they need to leap into a career in conservation – and then seeing them get a job!

It is truly inspiring to witness people and families walk away from our events and courses with a big smile on their faces knowing that we have sown the seed for change, and left them with a keen enthusiasm to learn more. At the Sussex Wildlife Trust we reach such diverse audiences, with people who would normally engage in their environment.

Do you have any tips for someone looking for a career in this area?

Alongside a qualification, get as much work experience as possible, get involved with as many diverse organisations as possible, make your mark and look keen and enthusiastic. Really make an impression within an organisation so that if any job comes up, you will be one of the first to know!! Allow volunteering to be your opportunity to find your niche and then go for it!
