A leadership course for professionals, independents and those working with groups of children/young people with the aim of planning, co-ordinating and delivering Forest School programmes.
The course includes 70 hours of tutored learning, made up of 3 Units and a Cross-Unit project at the end when students plan, deliver and write up a pilot programme of 6 Forest School sessions in their own setting.
The coursework will take between 10 to 12 months to complete. Level 3 is equivalent to an A-Level and you should be prepared for a very full and intense experience.
Approximately one-third of the course consists of contact time with other students and the tutors. The remaining hours are for students to undertake self-directed and independent study. During the course you will complete a Practical Workbook that documents your learning on risk assessment, safe tool use, building shelters, how to light and cook safely over a fire and the ecology of woodlands. You will be required to write an extended essay assignment on child development, learning and behaviour, as well as some research to create a 3 year Management Plan and an Environmental Impact Assessment for your proposed Forest School site. You will also be required to create and submit a working Forest School file that includes a Guidebook for Helpers, information for parents and some policy documents.
Once all of the above elements are completed you will plan a Forest School programme and run at least 6 sessions which will have to be documented in detail. The 6 sessions will need to be run on your school site. However, if you have an outdoor area that you would like to use that is away from your school, you will need a Level 3 qualified Forest School practitioner alongside you during those sessions. A member of Green Light’s tutor team will attend one of these 6 sessions to assess your practice and delivery.
Advice and support for all of the coursework will be given at the appropriate times.
