The Species Recovery Trust is a registered charity set up to tackle the loss of some of the rarest species in the UK.
There are over nine hundred native species in the UK that are classed as under threat, with several hundreds more currently widespread but known to be in significant decline. The countryside is now bereft of many species that were a familiar sight a mere generation ago.
A small number of these species are on the absolute brink of existence, poised to become extinct in our lifetimes. Each year several millions are spent on conservation and yet animals and plants are still slipping through the net. However, when targeted effectively, many rare species have been shown to thrive.
The Species Recovery Trust is committed to halting the loss of biodiversity in the UK.
Our primary aim is to remove 50 species from the edge of extinction in the UK by the year 2050, through effective conservation strategies informed by detailed scientific knowledge.
We will do this in six steps:
• Establish a priority register of critically endangered species
• Set up a monitoring programme for these species
• Carry out emergency habitat management on sites at most risk
• Work with landowners to encourage long-term conservation management
• Campaign to raise the status of rare species in the hearts and minds of the public, the media and politicians
• Educate and enthuse the public about species loss in the UK, training a whole new generation of wildlife enthusiasts to ensure we stay connected with our natural world.
