Why we want you

Your role will be to support our practical conservation staff at the Blean Woods and Seasalter Levels nature reserves based in East Kent, near Canterbury. You will focus on habitat management, reserve maintenance, surveys and public engagement events.

Regular duties will include:

  • Assisting with the creation of coppice plots and the development of woodland rides.
  • Making repairs to our site infrastructure such as benches, gates and fences.
  • Removing invasive species.
  • Assisting with wet grassland hydrology management.
  • Removing scrub from encroaching on field margins
  • Leading volunteer work parties.
  • Maintaining reserves equipment.
  • Taking part in bird surveys.

Inductions/relevant training for each task will be given beforehand and ongoing support provided by the warden and assistant warden.

What’s in it for you

Becoming an intern with the RSPB could be the first step to a great career in practical conservation. We have a small team of wardens covering a large area so our interns are a vital part of the team. You will develop:

  • An understanding of the practical techniques for the creation and maintenance of valuable habitats.
  • Knowledge of the ecology of woodland, heathland and grazing marsh.
  • Confidence leading volunteer teams and connecting the local community with nature.

You'll also get:

Training on CV writing and interview techniques

  • Access to our internal vacancies during your internship
  • A reference on successful completion of your internship
  • A dedicated mentor will monitor your progress and help with personal development throughout the internship.

Doing an internship will not guarantee you a job with the RSPB. Our internships are designed to offer work experience. However, interns can apply to our paid vacancies, including those only advertised internally. For obvious reasons an intern would need to have proven themselves in their current role, before expecting their volunteering experience to assist in an application to a paid post. The skills you need
