We are looking for a small team of 4-6 local history enthusiasts to study, maintain, and raise awareness of the historic features at RSPB Cors Ddyga Reserve on Anglesey. This site is a fascinating reserve that is becoming better known to the public. It has a wealth of historic features including the Berw Colliery Scheduled Ancient Monument, which provide an additional avenue of interest to the wildlife importance of the reserve.

A bit about our aim:

  • keep the Berw Colliery structures clear of damaging vegetation,
  • study the history of the Colliery and other historic features to prepare articles for an historical section on the RSPB’s Cors Ddyga webpage, and
  • organise and lead a small number of guided walks each year, showcasing the historic features of the reserve.

It is unlikely that this side of the reserve will ever come to light without the help of a team of enthusiastic volunteers.

RSPB Cors Ddyga has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to support this volunteering opportunity.

CADW will provide training about removing vegetation without damaging the masonry or the volunteers, and also how to assess the condition of the buildings. RSPB will supply hand tools, safety equipment, advice on safe working practices...and tea and biscuits!

And last but not least, since you’ll be giving up your time, it’s only fair that we offer to re-imburse your travel expenses (up to 25 miles).

When: from summer 2017 onwards.

Commitment: It varies. Meet once a month to inspect and maintain the historic buildings. Research and possible restoration projects may take more time, but will largely be up to the team.

Notes:

We have a team of volunteers who help us look after the habitats and the farm infrastructure on this reserve and three other wetlands. They meet at the Cors Ddyga office every Thursday. You are very welcome to join both.
