Our national impact assessment team guide clients on the environmental, socio-economic, health and equality component of infrastructure and development projects, providing comprehensive strategies and assessments to help obtain development consent for complex, high-profile projects. Recent projects include High Speed Two Phase 1 and Phase 2a, Thames Tideway Tunnel and the Garden Bridge in central London.

We are seeking an innovative environmental leader and impact assessment technical specialist with extensive experience of managing the delivery of major infrastructure projects assessment, leading and developing impact assessment teams, to join the leadership in our London office working on High Speed Two.


This role is a senior leadership position within our national impact assessment team and the successful candidate will contribute to the overall management and direction of the Environmental Consulting business in Arup. The successful candidate would fulfil the following roles:

  • Provision of senior leadership at Project Director or Project Manager level for major infrastructure impact assessment projects including environmental impact assessment (EIA) undertaken by Arup, such as for high speed rail;
  • Client liaison and stakeholder engagement with project team, legal advisors and external parties, such as statutory consultees;
  • Ensure adherence to Arup’s health and safety and quality management standards;
  • Work with the current leadership of the Environmental Consulting business to build, maintain and enhance our senior level capabilities in EIA and other impact assessment techniques, including building the capabilities of the team by strategic recruitment and continued learning and development;
  • With current national impact assessment leadership team, take a central role in business development for major infrastructure impact assessment work, including maintaining and developing Arup’s client network;
  • Demonstrate and promote successful client facing behaviour within the impact assessment team;
  • Maintain and enhance Arup’s external reputation by speaking at external events, preparing articles for publication and working with relevant professional bodies;
  • Share with existing team leadership the staff management responsibilities for the impact assessment team, including undertaking appraisals and staff development planning, providing mentoring to team members.

We would also expect that the successful candidate would participate in wider business activities within Arup, particularly with our Planning business which encompasses our Transport, Environmental, Masterplanning, Energy, Aviation and Development Planning teams.

Requirements and skills

Essential skills and knowledge:

  • Extensive consultancy experience with first-hand experience of directing and/or managing environmental impact assessments, and the preparation of environmental statements especially for major infrastructure projects such as in the rail, road and aviation sectors;
  • Strong knowledge of UK and European legislation;
  • A focus on meeting and exceeding client requirements and a commitment to excellence;
  • Commercial awareness and acumen with proven experience of successful financial management of environmental projects;
  • Proven experience of developing and implementing business strategies and winning environmental business in the impact assessment market;
  • Extensive team leadership, line management, staff mentoring experience, with a focus on long-term learning and the development of others;
  • Good analytical, creative and conceptual thinking with a focus on finding solutions in relation to EIA technical and project management issues;
  • Excellent communication with the ability to successfully receive, interpret and impart information and ideas, both written and spoken to a wide range of audiences.


  • A good honours degree in a relevant subject such as Environmental Science;
  • Fellow/Full Membership of a relevant professional institute (e.g. Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) or the Institution of Environmental Science (IES);
  • Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status or an equivalent Chartership.

Desirable skills and knowledge:

  • Qualification to MSc level on a relevant course such as Environmental Impact Assessment and Management;
  • Principal/Registered EIA Practitioner and/or Principal/Registered Environmental Auditor with IEMA;
  • Strong understanding of sustainability issues and consultancy skills in other complementary fields such as such as audit and due diligence, Strategic Environmental Assessment, Health Impact Assessment and Equality Impact Assessment;
  • Experience of working in a major project environment collocated with the client.
  • Experience of writing and/or presenting evidence at public inquiry.
