Sustainability & Regeneration Officer
Two year fixed term contract
Sustainable regeneration and growth in Waltham Forest
Waltham Forest is at the forefront of regeneration in London, with a range of opportunities for positive and sustainable change currently being delivered across the borough.
LB Waltham Forest has a track record of securing investment and delivering regeneration projects, most recently with the opening of Lea Bridge Station, an exciting new creative industry space at Central Parade in Walthamstow and the Heritage Lottery Funded regeneration of St James Street.
The regeneration of our streets, shops and public spaces is a key priority for our residents and businesses, with investment projects underway across the borough’s town centres. This complements the plans of developers, with schemes for 2,000 homes approved in 2016. The council is also scoping out proposals for a further 1,000 new homes and mixed-use development on key sites it owns.
Two major growth areas are developing at Blackhorse Lane and Lea Bridge-Leyton which will see 7,500 new homes, hundreds of thousands of square metres of business space, community and leisure facilities delivered in designated Housing and Creative Enterprise Zones.
A council-led partnership is bringing forward the £8.7m Walthamstow Wetlands project where 200-hectares of open space and reservoirs will open to the public in 2017, creating a major resource for London, right at the heart of the Lea Valley growth area.
It’s an exciting time to work in Waltham Forest and be part of the council’s regeneration drive; please have a look at our website for an overview of our current work.
The person we are looking for
To help deliver these initiatives, we are looking for an enthusiastic team player with skills and experience in sustainability projects and sustainable development.
This two-year fixed term contract will work with the Council’s Regeneration & Sustainability Programme Manager to provide clear sustainability advice to elected members, colleagues and developers, alongside working on delivery projects forming part of the ambitious Lea Valley Eastside Vision
Specific areas where experience is sought include advice and knowledge of the evolving carbon reduction sector as well as policy and practical advice on delivering sustainable development. Key sustainability projects include the Council’s Carbon Offset Fund, de-centralised energy networks and “Climate Local”. Additionally we are looking for skills in securing external funding, project delivery, monitoring and management. But we want to see that you can think strategically, are able to innovate, adapt and bring imagination into sustainable project delivery.
These are all important skills as you will need to collaborate and communicate with colleagues from across the organisation, including senior officers and elected members, as well as a range of external stakeholders. This means you will need to have a strong commitment to not just engaging local people, but working closely with them to deliver successful sustainability and regeneration projects.
The attached Job Description gives an outline of what we expect to see. We look forward to receiving your application. The selection process will involve an interview, presentation and testing.
