Recycle for Greater Manchester is working with Enventure Research to undertake a doorstepping campaign aimed encouraging residents to recycle as much as they possibly can, utilising the Councils’ kerbside recycling services. The campaign has already been delivered in Salford, Stockport, Rochdale, Manchester, Trafford and Tameside. The 2017 phase of the campaign will be working in Bolton, Oldham and a further campaign in Salford. Please note that we are only looking for staff to join the Oldham or Salford campaigns. The campaign aims to increase awareness, understanding and correct use of the waste and recycling services by engaging with residents and motivating them to recycle through direct interaction on their doorstep.

Duties and responsibilities

Recycling Promoters will be required to speak to residents in order to increase awareness, understanding and participation in the waste and recycling services. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Knocking on all doors in the areas allocated to you by your Team Leader
  • Working as part of a team to ensure your allocated areas are fully covered daily and targets are achieved
  • Talking to residents informing them about the recycling services available
  • Encouraging residents to participate and utilise the recycling services
  • Providing residents with relevant information and advice about the recycling services and promotional materials such as leaflets and information packs
  • Helping residents overcome barriers to recycling and answering any questions
  • Taking orders for recycling containers if required
  • Keeping accurate records of the specific households visited each day
  • Providing feedback to your Team Leader on a regular basis
  • Meeting daily/weekly targets tailored for each local authority / tasks required
  • Work within health and safety rules and guidance

In addition to these Recycling Promoter duties, Team Leaders will also be required to:

  • Organise meeting points and planning daily work schedules
  • Ensure punctuality of team members
  • Setting and meeting expected daily targets
  • Updating the Project Manager on team progress on a regular basis (verbally and through completion of a weekly report)
  • Undertaking regular performance and quality checks of your team and feed back to Project Manager
  • Keeping accurate records, completing relevant paperwork, updating logs and the return of necessary paperwork and equipment to the Project Manager
  • Log team in and out with Project Manager
  • Work within health and safety rules and guidance, and ensure team members are also working within health and safety rules and guidance

Personal Specification


  • Ability and willingness to engage confidently with members of the public in a clear and assertive manner
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well as part of a team to meet performance targets
  • Keen interest in waste, recycling and environmental issues
  • Good organisational skills and ability to work without direct supervision
  • Ability to work outside in all weather in small teams
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and occasional additional hours
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the Greater Manchester area
  • Team Leaders must have experience of managing and monitoring other people / small teams


  • An environmental qualification or related experience
  • Clean driving licence and access to a vehicle

Further details

Duration: Salford campaign due to start 9th Feb 2017. Oldham campaign due to start w/c 13th Feb 2017. Both start dates are subject to change according to requirements. Please note that this role is temporary as the campaign is due to end March 31st 2017
Hours: 30-35 hours per week (depending on campaign requirements) 11:30am - 7pm Tuesday - Friday, 10:30am - 6pm on Saturday
Pay rate: Recycling Promoters - £8.25 p/h and Team Leaders - £10 p/h
Responsible to: Team Leader/Project Manager
