We are seeking to employ an assistant ecologist, initially on short term contracts to work within our newly established team in our Wakefield office. We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic and experienced team player who has both a personal interest and a desire to extend their knowledge. Under the direction of our team leader, the work will centre on conducting bat, reptile and great crested newt surveys and assistance with other areas of our work as required.

The Ecology Consultancy is one of the UK’s largest ecological consultancies with a sound reputation for delivering objective, high quality work. Established in 1999 we have grown to circa 70 permanent staff over 6 offices, in Wakefield, London, Sussex, Norfolk, Midlands, and Scotland.

Our current workload includes survey, assessment and mitigation work on a wide variety of projects comprising; historic building restoration, large scale housing developments, highway works and infrastructure schemes. Our clients include firms of architects, planning consultants, engineering companies, statutory agencies and local authorities.

The post will be based from our Wakefield and occasionally Manchester office with the main areas of work being Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and Derbyshire. The project based nature of our work means that there will be a requirement to undertake such travel as is necessary to successfully carry out contracts.

Person specification

The Assistant Ecologist will need the following:


  • An appropriate degree qualification;
  • Experience of reptile, great crested newt and bat surveys;
  • Ability to identify native herpetofauna to species, life stage and sex;
  • Be willing to work during evenings and at weekends where needed;
  • Have a full clean UK driving licence;
  • Good data presentation and report writing skills; and
  • A valid CSCS card.


  • A great crested newt survey licence;
  • Experience with other species groups as well as the ability to identify habitats and indicator plant species;
  • Experience of mitigation sites;
  • Experience of Ecological Clerk of Works; and
  • CIEEM Graduate or Associate Membership.

What do we offer?

  • 6-8 month fixed term or casual hourly contracts from mid-March to mid-October;
  • Starting salary £18,600.00 pa (£8.94 ph) based on a 40 hour week;
  • 28 days holiday inclusive of public holidays (pro rata for length of service);
