Senior Flood Management Officer - SUDS
Contract type: Permanent
Salary: £33,151 - £34,975
Buckinghamshire County Council has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Flood Management Officer, as a key member of our flood management team.
As part of Transport, Economy, Environment, you’ll have the chance to make Buckinghamshire a better place to live, work and visit. Your efforts will ensure that we’re prepared and ready to prevent and minimise the detrimental effects of floods to the best of our ability. It’s a chance to work in a new and growing team, that’s looking to lead the way in this important area.
About the role
In 2015, Buckinghamshire County Council, in its role as Lead Local Flood Authority, was given a new statutory responsibility to assess the management of surface water in planning applications for all major development. Ensuring that new major developments are designed well to account for and contain all flood risk is vital and requires consistent approaches based on sound strategies. That’s where you come in. By liaising with the Local Planning Authorities and Developers you’ll be ensuring that information is comprehensive and recorded efficiently and that responses are consistent and accurate. You will be managing the workload of a small team, reviewing and commenting on drainage aspects of planning applications for major developments and by doing this you will help in delivering statutory flood management duties. Buckinghamshire County Council are keen for this area of work to grow and develop and part of the role will be to shape how the service can be taken forward.
You’ll have a key role as the Senior Sustainable Drainage Officer to deliver the statutory responsibility to manage sustainable surface water drainage in major development. You will have good knowledge of sustainable drainage systems and liaising with Local Planning Authorities and developers on drainage issues for planning applications. It’s the sort of knowledge and experience you may have gained while working in a previous consultancy, design, or planning role and possibly through your degree (or equivalent). You will be managing the workload of up to four people so evidence of both experience and skills in this area would be expected. Through your studies (in a relevant subject) and work experience, you’ll have developed good communication skills, organisational skills and a good grasp of the factors influencing flood management. An organised approach to ensuring that incoming and outgoing information is consistent and accurate is required. In particular you need an enthusiasm for the area of work, a desire to learn and develop in the role and to take forward and develop the sustainable drainage area.
Buckinghamshire County Council is entering one of the most exciting periods of change in its history. We’re looking to become a more agile, commercial and digitally-focussed organisation. The aim? To benefit our residents and shape our county for the future. With substantial investment in place, we now need people who are determined to make this transformation happen. In return, we offer some of the best benefits around. Everything from a good work-life balance and flexible working, to discounted public transport and sports centre membership.
